Provenance 106: Implementation
Projects in implementation, and how to get started.
The path to implementation is complex, especially as C2PA has grown from a proof-of-concept to a fully-fledged standard and the need for security and durability has become clear. Here are some examples of end-to-end implementations.
#Early News Demos
The first camera implementations of C2PA came out in 2022, in Nikon and Leica cameras. A year later, news media outlets were able to test provenance in action, featuring photos with C2PA metadata signed by real cameras and published on official websites: Reuters with Canon, and the Associated Press with Sony.
Although these were only proofs-of-concept, they provided an early look at the experience of reading news with valid C2PA provenance.
#Demo: CEPIC/IPTC 2025
For enterprise publishers, an important part of the production workflow is digital asset management (DAM), through which content is uploaded, organized, modified, and published. Trufo partnered with Orange Logic DAM and National Geographic to craft the first provenance production workflow: with a simple plugin, the content was watermarked and publisher C2PA metadata was added. A recording of the demo is available on YouTube.
The demonstration was showcased at a joint convention held by CEPIC and IPTC in summer 2025, alongside a variety of other talks and panels on provenance implementation.
#Demo: IBC 2025
Provenance in broadcasting marks a technical capstone, because videos are much more complex than images. The first proof-of-concept — a collaboration between Sony, the BBC, the EBU, Trufo, and others — was shown at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in fall 2025, as part of the Stamping Your Content accelerator program.
The demonstration involved a camcorder with C2PA, a video player to display provenance, and an automatic system for watermarking and fingerprinting.
#Smartphone: Pixel 10
In 2025, Google launched the Pixel 10, the first smartphone with C2PA built in — a watershed moment in provenance adoption.
Notably, the Pixel 10 is the first device to attain the Level 2 conformance laid out by the C2PA, featuring an on-device HSM and TSA. It is also the first hardware device to be conformant at all.
Trufo provides the certificates, watermarks, and APIs to run an end-to-end provenance pilot.
